Tama County has instituted a new emergency notification system called Alert Iowa. The new notification system will distribute emergency messages in the same manner as CodeRed previously did by landline, Cell phone, Text Messages and E-mail. Alert Iowa will be able to send mass notifications to communities via internet mapping tools for a quicker more efficient calling capabilities to deliver pre-recorded public service and emergency messages directly to homes, cell phone, and businesses.

Tama County residents will not need to enter their home, landline, phone information. The state has passed legislation to automatically add landline numbers into the Alert Iowa notification system. Our Residents are welcome and encouraged to enter their contact information for business, cell phones and email addresses registered. IF you do have a home, landline, phone that you do not wish to receive notifications on please contact our office and we can remove you from the notification list.

By registering your will automatically receive Blizzard, Flash Flood and Tornado Warnings. If you would like to receive additional notifications it is as easy as selecting any or all of the following weather alerts you would like to receive: Excessive Heat, Heavy Snow, Red Flag, Wind Chill, Flood Warning, High Wind, Severe Thunderstorm, Winter Storm, Hazardous Materials, Ice Storm, Shelter In Place.

You can select any or all of the Communities in Tama county that you would like to receive notifications for:
Buckingham, Chelsea, Clutier, Dinsdale, Dysart, Elberon, Garwin, Gladbrook, Irving, Lincoln, Montour, Tama, Toledo, Traer, Vining.

To register for Tama County Alert Iowa if you are unable to register on-line please contact the Emergency Management Office at 641-484-6261 or Tama County Dispatch at 641-484-3760 option 1 and let the staff know you would like to sign up for the Alert Iowa Program.

Remember- Turn around, don't drown

Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather related hazard. The main reason is people underestimate the force and power of water. More than half of all flood related deaths result from vehicles being swept downstream. Of these, many are preventable.

Q: What can I do to avoid getting caught is this situation?

Follow these safety rules:

* Monitor the NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, or your favorite news source for vital weather related information.
* If flooding occurs, get to higher ground. Get out of areas subject to flooding. This includes dips, low spots, canyons, washes etc.
* Avoid areas already flooded, especially if the water is flowing fast. Do not attempt to cross flowing streams. Turn Around Don't Drown
* Road beds may be washed out under flood waters. NEVER drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around Don't Drown(tm)
* Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams and washes, particularly during threatening conditions.
* Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.
