Conservation Technician/Park Ranger

Under general direction of the Director and Maintenance Supervisor performs maintenance duties on designated parks and public access areas; provides for the security and maintenance of facilities and premises of the County Conservation Board; repairs, maintains, and operates equipment, machinery and tools used in various maintenance, operational, and repair functions; is responsible for all maintenance needs of the Tama County Nature Center. Assists in patrol and enforcement of park rules and board policies. Will be responsible for day to day supervision of maintenance staff in the absence of the Maintenance Supervisor as per the Supervisor’s directions. Participates in various wildlife habitat, environmental education, development and related program functions. Performs related work as required. Occasional weekend, holiday, evening and overnight work will be required.

DUTIES: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned when deemed consistent with the purpose of the position. Performs routine maintenance duties such as mowing turf, trails and plantings, tree trimming, debris and garbage collection, janitorial duties, snow removal, application of herbicides and pesticides; and maintenance of campsites, picnic tables, park roads, fences, signs, shelters, beach, restrooms, playgrounds, shooting range, docks, boat ramps, exhibits, and other recreation facilities. Performs repair duties as assigned on all facilities and premises under the management of the County Conservation Board. Addresses maintenance needs of the Tama County Nature Center. Repairs, maintains and operates machinery, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance/repair of facilities and premises; including, but not limited to, trucks, mowers, tractors, trailers, chainsaws, welder, sprayers, power hand tools and general hand tools. Works closely with the Maintenance Supervisor when requested to discuss action plans for job tasks and upcoming projects. In the absence of the Maintenance Supervisor and upon request of the Supervisor issues work orders, assigns movement of staff in and between facilities, and monitors job performance of maintenance staff. While performing maintenance duties will assure that facilities and property are used consistent with Board policies, rule and regulations and State statutes and enforces the same; provides general information to the public concerning their use. Reads relevant publications, attends conferences and workshops to acquire information which will assist in the performance of the assigned duties and encourage professionalism. Patrols designated land areas and facilities to ensure that facilities and property are used consistent with Board policies, rules and regulations and State statutes and enforces the same; provides general information to the public concerning their use; collects camp fees. Provides a safe environment for park users, and administers first aid in case of accidents. Communicates with and assists law enforcement and emergency personnel as needed while patrolling or working on county conservation facilities. Participates in habitat management on lands such as: general forestry practices, tree planting, weed control, pruning, culling trees, tree identification, invasive species removal, pollinator planting, water quality testing, planting food plots, prescribed burns, wood duck nesting structures, bluebird nest structures, fisheries monitoring, and construction of fish habitat.

QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university and two years of relevant job experience, or completion of an associate’s degree with four year of relevant job experience. Major course work in natural resources management, conservation, forestry, park management, wildlife biology, or a related field. Individual must possess a valid State of Iowa motor vehicle operator’s license. Must be able to be cleared by Tama County to drive a county vehicle. Must have or be able to obtain a valid CDL- Class A certification (with air brakes), if required. Ability to qualify for, attend, and complete peace officer training through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, if required. Must receive certification in Commercial Pesticide Application (categories 2, 5, 6), and CPR/First Aid Certification. This job is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

SALARY: $24.00 - $26.00 per hour ($49,920 - $54,080 per year) dependent upon experience with standard county benefits. Tama County is an equal opportunity employer.
